Student Groups & Activities

Johns Hopkins students have historically been active in sustainability activities. Students have contributed significantly to many of our environmental successes, such as getting the JHU recycling program off the ground, hosting a national "Greening" conference, launching a transportation shuttle service between campuses, and making the campus more bike-friendly. Each year students are involved in countless activities that promote sustainability on Hopkins campuses.

Some of the active groups on campus include:

Students for Environmental Action is a group that promotes environmental advocacy, outreach, and awareness.  SEA also constructed and maintains a campus community garden.

Engineers for a Sustainable World is a group whose members focus on specific hands-on projects that have environmental benefits.  One of the projects this year centers around converting waste cooking oil into biodiesel.

Roosevelt Institution is a student-led national policy think-tank.  The Johns Hopkins chapter is currently working on developing a set of new construction policies that incorporate green design and principles of sustainability.

Hopkins Energy Action Team formed in 2006 to promote the adoption of an energy policy for the Homewood campus.  After succeeding in their original objective, the group has refocused on supporting Maryland's Global Warming Solutions Act in 2008.

Engineers Without Borders partner with disadvantaged communities to improve their quality of life through implementation of environmentally and economically sustainable engineering projects.

Johns Hopkins Outdoors Club runs weekly trips during the academic year which include hiking, backpacking, climbing, canoeing, caving, and other outdoors activities.

Recreation Center Experiential Education is based on the concept of helping students learn by participating in life's adventures - not just watching.

Hopkins Cycling is a student club focused on promoting a healthy lifestyle of bicycle riding and racing. Club membership is open to all Hopkins students, faculty, and staff from all divisions of JHU and includes cyclists from all backgrounds, disciplines and fitness levels.
