As sad as it makes us, Blake is heading back to his beloved Pacific Northwest, which means the position of "Sustainability Coordinator" is now open.  Interested applicants should look at the job description and send in the necessary materials by May 15, 2008.

--- Tuesday, April 22 (Earth Day) ---

Homewood Campus:
Dump on the Quad & Tap Water Challenge
(all day on the Upper Quad)
SEA continues a ten-year Earth Week tradition by sorting through dormitory trash to demonstrate how much recyclable material is thrown away by students.  A concurrent Tap Water Challenge will also take place on the Breezeway.

Bloomberg School of Public Health Campus:
Single-stream recycling program begins.  Green single-stream recycling bins will be in place throughout the building.  More information is available at the JHSPH Environmental Stewardship Committee web site.  Check out this YouTube video on the single-stream recycling process.

8:30am - 5:00pm, Main Lobby:  Climate Change Facts presentation will play on the “Wall of Wonder.”

11:00am - 1:00pm, Main Lobby Gallery:  Members of JHSPH’s Environmental Stewardship Committee will distribute Earth Day materials, including information about the School’s new single stream recycling program; games, giveaways, and other earth friendly resources.

12:00pm - 1:00pm:  Lunchtime brown-out: Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to turn off lights, computers, and monitors; eat lunch in natural light; or take a walk outside to demonstrate a small step toward reducing their carbon footprint.

--- Wednesday, April 23 ---

Homewood Campus:
5:00pm - 6:00pm: SEA and Dining Services will hold their annual Eco-BBQ on the Beach.

School of Medicine Campus:
LIFE (Leadership Initiative For the Environment), the School of Medicine's student environmental group, will host the 2nd annual Earth Day Event in the Turner Concourse.  For a chance to win 1 of 5 iPod Shuffles, bring a reusable cup, printer cartridges, old cell phones, computer parts/monitors, electronic equipment, or batteries.

4:15pm - 4:45pm:  Raffle tickets available for early arrival
4:30pm - 5:00pm:  Speaker Mike Tidwell, Director, Chesapeake Climate Action Coalition
5:00pm - 5:30pm, Tilghman Auditorium:  JHMI and Baltimore City Recycling Q&A
5:00pm - 7:00pm:  Happy Hour, prizes and booths about environmental action

Homewood Campus:
U.S. Green Building Council Event: “NASA Scientists Talk Carbon”
6:00pm - 7:00pm, Glass Pavilion:  USGBC Registration and networking
7:00pm - 8:30pm, Glass Pavilion:  USGBC Panel discussion with Q&A
The Johns Hopkins Sustainability Initiative is partnering with the USGBC to host a panel of experts from NASA  who will discuss biofuels (a full life cycle perspective), and the effects of urbanization on climate change and food security.  The networking and education event will be attended by a wide array of prominent Baltimore-area business leaders.   L&J Construction Service has generously made a donation to cover the attendance fee for a limited number of Baltimore-area students and faculty - these free spot are going fast, but please inquire about availability if interested.

8:00pm - 10:00pm, Remsen 101:  SEA will host a movie screening of Everything's Cool.

--- Friday, April 25 ---

Homewood Campus:
All day:  SEA and the College Democrats will partner for an Earth Week tie-dyeing event at Spring Fair.  The event will continue each day through the weekend.

--- Saturday, April 26 ---

East Baltimore Campus (Schools of Medicine, Nursing, & Public Health):
As part of SOURCE’s Tri-School Day of Service, sponsored by SOURCE, the Student Outreach Resource Center of the Johns Hopkins University, and the Schools of Medicine; Nursing; and Public Health, three Earth Day related events will take place in the East Baltimore area.

10:30am - 2:30pm:  
The Historic East Baltimore Community Action Coalition, an East Baltimore community group, will be landscaping a community garden.  Tasks include painting, planting, and garden maintenance.

10:00am - 2:00pm
Join Parks and People's Global Youth Service Day efforts and work beside Frank Square Elementary students and their families as they mulch, plant, and weed around the school.  A vegetable garden will also be created for a future educational project on healthy eating!

10:00am - 2:00pm
Help a neighboring elementary school, Rayner Browne Elementary, by assisting with their community garden, and helping with the upkeep of their grounds and other maintenance.


Upcoming Events

SEX IT - February 1 - April 30, 2008
EARTH (Energy Activity Reduction Team @ Hopkins) is launching SEX IT (Saving Energy Extreme: Interdorm Tournament), the first ever Inter-Dorm energy saving competition at Hopkins.  Students in Wolman, Bradford, Buildings A&B, McCoy, AMR I&II, Homewood, and Charles Commons will compete to reduce their energy consumption.  Tallies will be reported weekly, and all residents of the winning dorm will get a prize.  For details and results, check out the website.

Ecofestival - April 26, 2007
Eco-Festival in Baltimore.  This is the annual sustainability festival in the City of Baltimore corresponding with Earth Day and the Baltimore Green Week.  Details

Past Events

Green Idea Generator - November 16, 2007 to May 9, 2008 
The Johns Hopkins Sustainability Initiative launched the first Green Idea Generator program in November, 2007, through which 12 students proposed projects to improve environmental stewardship on campus.  Participants selected three student-led projects to move forward with guidance by specific faculty members: using waste vegetable oil from the dining halls as biofuel; constructing a “green roof” on the Mattin Center; launching a paper reduction campaign to improve paper recycling and use on campus.  Project teams have started work on their projects, which will be completed by the end of the semester. Recyclemania - January 27 - April 13, 2008 
The Students for Environmental Action (SEA) and JHU Recycling are coordinating Hopkins’ participation in the nation-wide Recyclemania competition.  The competition among college and university recycling programs started January 27th and will run for 10 weeks.  SEA will hold Recyclemania events every other week, starting Thursday, Feb. 5th on the Breezeway.  See Johns Hopkins' results!

Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference - March 31-April 2, 2008
3rd Annual Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland.  See the conference announcement.

Urban Forest Project Launch Party - April 12, 2008 
The Johns Hopkins Sustainability Initiative, Digital Media Center, MICA, and Tilt Studio Foundation are teaming up to launch the Baltimore Urban Forest Project on April 12th.  Over 250 artists and students designed banners based on the image of a tree and the idea of sustainability; the banners will be hung throughout Baltimore City in the Spring, then recycled into tote bags and sold to benefit the “Tree Baltimore Campaign” by the Department of Recreation & Parks.  Details here.
