Meet the Staff

Davis Bookhart
Davis Boohart is chair of the Johns Hopkins Sustainability Committee, a 16-member group convened by President William R. Brody to boost the University's environmental profile.  Bookhart is also Manager, Energy Management and Environmental Stewarship and directs the Johns Hopkins Sustainability Initiative.  Bookhart's charge is to develop sustainability initiatives that conserve electricity, curb water usage, and encourage recycling, while creating a general level of excitement about ecological initiatives at Hopkins campuses.

Bookhart holds a master's degree in International Affaris from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a master's of American Literature from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.  Before joining the Office of Facilities Management at Homewood, Bookhart founded, and remains president of, Charm21 - Clean and Healthy Air through Renewables in Maryland - a non-profit group advocating the use of renewable fuels and resources in the Baltimore region.  Bookhart helped a number of Balimore-based companies such as CleanCities.com and East Coast Organics, develop "green" marketing plans, and on a national level, Bookhart was senior project director of the public interest group Consumer Energy Council of America.

Blake Hough
Blake Hough is Sustainability Coordinator for the Johns Hopkins University.  His responsibilities as Sustainability Coordinator include building and bridging lines of communication and cooperation between students, faculty, staff, and the Office of Facilities Management in relation to sustainability issues.  Hough also supports the Johns Hopkins Sustainability Initiative in project management, focusing strongly on energy use, transportation, and identifying renewable resource opportunities.

In 2007 Hough earned his bachelor’s degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from Johns Hopkins University.  He co-founded and directed the Hopkins Energy Action Team (HEAT), a coalition of 24 student groups and 2,600 students which led a 2007 campaign to institute a climate neutral energy policy for the University.  Prior to graduation, Hough led the campus group Students for Environmental Action (SEA) for two years.

Whenever possible he escapes to the mountains, hopefully those of his native West Coast, for the bliss of backpacking, hiking, and fishing.  Blake is also a sea kayaking guide in the San Juan Islands of Washington State where he relishes engaging his captive audience in discussions on sustainable living choices.

Leana Pitkevits
Leana Pitkevits currently works as the Living for the Future Program Coordinator at the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF).  Her work at the CLF focuses on campus sustainability, understanding and addressing the food system’s contribution to climate change and water quality issues, specifically within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.  She received a Masters in Environmental Sciences and Policy from Johns Hopkins University in 2007, and a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 1998.

Prior to working for the CLF, she spent many years as an environmental educator and naturalist including working for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Baltimore Harbor program on the workboat Snow Goose, the Friends of the National Zoo in Front Royal, Virginia and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

In her spare time she savors cooking with locally grown foods provided by a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.  Leana also digs gardening, occasionally finds her groove supporting live music, and, given her druthers, she volunteers on the Tree Team for
The Friends of Patterson Park.

Heather Heine

Heather Heine is the conservative contingent of the Sustainability Initiative.  Her favorite question is, "But what does it mean for the bottom line?"  She is currently enrolled in the MBA/MSITS program at the Carey Business School of the Johns Hopkins University.

Rumor has it that she once participated in a two month trip across America in a Volkswagen Bus.
